Poster Abstract

Biofuels Emissions Testing at the Energy Institute

Energy Institute Staff
The Pennsylvania State University

Interest in the use of biofuels in boilers has increased due to the rising cost of fossil fuel prices and new regulations triggered by outbreaks of infectious diseases like BSE have caused the creation of more waste products in the meat rendering industries. Emission factors for biofuels need to be developed so that state and federal regulatory agencies know how to permit biofuel operations. The Energy Institute tested a series of biofuels in an industrial-scale boiler and evaluated their emissions and how they compared to traditional fossil fuel emissions. Pennsylvania DEP, US Department of Energy, and numerous industry collaborators funded this research.
