We analyzed the effect of net metering, carbon credit sales, and a solids separator on the profitability of anaerobic digesters on Pennsylvania dairy farms. The mean NPV of the project is positive only for large farms (1,000+ cows) that realize benefits associated with net metering and carbon credits and who use solids for bedding material. We conclude that, in the absence of investment subsidies, manure digesters are not a profitable investment for most Pennsylvania dairy farms.
