Poster Abstract

Potential of Old and New Pennsylvania Field Crops for Biofuels

Greg Roth

As new markets for energy crops emerge in Pennsylvania, we have begun to re-evaluate the potential for traditional and new crops to meet these needs. Evaluation of potential feedstock crops in our environment should be based on several key agronomic criteria, including the potential energy yield, ability to be produced using sustainable no-till techniques, the potential of the crop as a winter cover crop, by product feed production potential and the economics of production. Studies are underway to compare these criteria for crops such as corn, soybeans, barley, wheat, canola, and fodder beets.
